Satoshi Nakamoto is the name used by the still-unknown person, or group of people, who created bitcoin, wrote its foundational whitepaper in 2008, and released the first version of its software in early 2009. Despite bitcoin’s enormous global impact, Satoshi’s true identity has never been confirmed, making it one of the most enduring mysteries in modern technology and finance.

Satoshi’s involvement began publicly in October 2008, with the publication of a nine-page whitepaper titled ‘bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System,’ which laid out, in remarkably clear technical detail, a solution to the long-standing ‘double-spend problem’ that had prevented earlier attempts at digital cash from succeeding without a trusted central authority.
