The $10 Billion Pizza
When Laszlo Hanyecz woke up on May 22, 2010, he was just a regular software developer with a pizza craving. Little did he know that his lunch order would become one of the most famous transactions in financial history.
Hanyecz had been “mining” Bitcoin on his computer for months. Back then, Bitcoin wasn’t worth much money – it was mostly a project that excited computer programmers and privacy advocates. He had collected thousands of these digital coins but had found few ways to use them in the real world.
Hungry and curious, Hanyecz posted a request on a Bitcoin forum: “I’ll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas.” At the time, those bitcoins were worth roughly $41.
A teenager named Jeremy Sturdivant accepted the offer. He ordered two Papa John’s pizzas to be delivered to Hanyecz, and in return, received 10,000 Bitcoin. Both parties felt satisfied – Hanyecz got his pepperoni pizza, and Sturdivant received some interesting digital tokens.
Fast forward to today, and those same 10,000 bitcoins would be worth more than $600 million at current prices. At Bitcoin’s all-time high in 2021, they would have been worth nearly $690 million. From $41 to hundreds of millions – possibly the most expensive meal in human history.
Why This Pizza Matters
The “Bitcoin Pizza” transaction wasn’t just an expensive lunch. It marked the first time Bitcoin was used to purchase physical goods, proving that this digital money could actually buy something tangible in the real world.
Before this purchase, Bitcoin was purely theoretical money. The pizza transaction gave Bitcoin its first real-world price benchmark – about a quarter of a cent per Bitcoin. This simple act of buying two pizzas helped transform Bitcoin from a computer science experiment into an actual currency.
May 22 is now celebrated in the crypto community as “Bitcoin Pizza Day,” with events and special promotions at pizzerias around the world. The date has become a time to reflect on how far cryptocurrency has come.
Where Are They Now?
What happened to the two men who made this historic transaction?
Laszlo Hanyecz doesn’t express regret about his famous purchase, despite missing out on extraordinary wealth. In a 2019 interview with Bitcoin Magazine, he said, “I don’t regret it. I think that it’s great that I got to be part of the early history of Bitcoin.” (https://bitcoinmagazine.com/culture/laszlo-hanyecz-how-a-pizza-became-worth-83-million)
He continued mining and spending Bitcoin, and even repeated his pizza purchase multiple times. Hanyecz remains a respected figure in the Bitcoin community for his early contributions to the network.
As for Jeremy Sturdivant, the teenager who received the 10,000 Bitcoin, he didn’t hold onto his digital fortune for long. He spent the coins when they were worth about $400 in total. Had he held onto those coins, he would be among the wealthiest Bitcoin investors today.
“I had no idea how huge it would become,” Sturdivant later told Bitcoin Magazine.
Lessons from the Bitcoin Pizza
This story teaches us several important lessons about cryptocurrency:
First, early adoption of new technology often involves risk and uncertainty. The true value of innovation isn’t always apparent at first glance.
Second, Bitcoin’s journey from worthless tokens to valuable assets happened slowly, then suddenly. For years, each coin was worth only pennies before its value began to climb dramatically.
Third, the story highlights how rapidly the cryptocurrency ecosystem has evolved. What seemed like a novelty purchase in 2010 now looks like an extraordinary missed investment opportunity.
Perhaps most importantly, the pizza purchase demonstrates cryptocurrency’s fundamental purpose – to serve as money that can be exchanged for goods and services. Despite all the speculation and investment surrounding Bitcoin today, its original goal was simply to be used, just as Hanyecz used it to satisfy his pizza craving.
The Legacy Continues
Today, the Bitcoin pizza transaction lives on as both a cautionary tale and an inspiring story. It reminds us of Bitcoin’s humble beginnings and extraordinary growth.
